Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster

A customer asked numerous years ago on how to increase the luggage capacity of his 300SL roadster and this was one of the options. It was never built as he traded it for a ’55 300SL “Gullwing” instead that was cosmetically modified and driven but ultimately returned to original form and sold.

These later 300SL roadsters were better as a grand touring car in comparison to the gullwing coupe itself. The engine made more horsepower (NSL racing camshaft was standard), less gymnastics required to get into (revised tube frame with lower door sills), MUCH better ventilation (the coupe gets extremely hot and the windows are a joke) and the revised lower axle pivot point helped to reduce the oversteer issues of the original coupe. But the coupe had a slight bit more luggage space in comparison.
